Now it takes a more direct route under the Continental Divide via the six mile long Moffat Tunnel. Thanks to this train track, hiker, skiers and climbers have good four-season access to a trailhead deep in the mountains. And they say technology hasn't brought us anything! The East Portal Trailhead serves the very popular South Boulder Creek Trail.

It was named after Colorado railroad pioneer David Moffat. Fifty miles (80 km) west of Denver is the East Portal in the Front Range, about 10 miles (15 km) west of the town of Rollinsville.
