01.04.2021 · Edit: I forgot to mention that the loginmonitor.sh does not run at boot. Even when the dm was working the login dialog box was on the second display, not the primary one (which is the DP-0). Last edited by Daiti (2021-04-01 10:08:57)

03.04.2021 · I can login using tty and start gnome using "startx" without any problems. When the gnome-session is locked (Win+L) it jumps to the graphical GDM lock screen. At this point, it is impossible to login to the existing gnome-session again because i get a "login failed" loop. The GDM lockscreen behaves like somebody keeps pressing the "enter"-key and i am not able to type in my password.

I installed 20.04 (upgraded from 18.04) and cannot log in at all. I’ve tried changing my password using recovery mode, installing lightdm, and using Ctrl-Alt-F3.. Strangely, when using Ctrl-Alt-F3, I can log in as root, but not into my personal account.Even after I change the password to my personal account using the command line in recovery mode, I can’t log in to my personal account.

I was still able to do what I wanted because top right icons are working and I was able to reboot from there, but I'm now unable to login locally. Even after the restore, the same issue remained. Not enough points for my own answer; but this one helped me. I couldn't find much of use in the logs, but remembered I had uninstalled Python yesterday (trying to reduce the footprint). Do not remove Python. A reinstall of lxsession did the trick in the end. – Grim Jul 29 '20 at 15:26
